Before and after photos of Solano Avenue PTA volunteer effort to create a healthier and greener passage to school

Our community is majority Chinese and Spanish-speaking, mostly low-to-moderate income. Our school pre-dates the 110 Freeway and is in what remains of historic Chavez Ravine, just behind Dodger Stadium. The city has eliminated regular cleanings in the Solano Ave. tunnel. The floor was stained with urine, filled with broken bottles, and spray cans. Councilman Ed Reyes's office told us that furloughs and budget cuts make it unlikely that the city will return to regularly scheduled maintenance. The office "hopes residents will take their own initiative to clean-up," and supports our efforts. We thank all the volunteers, and especially Mario Hernandez and AMPM Maintenance Personnel, Inc. who generously is donating his company's professional power washer and staff to clean the tunnel once a month until the city is able to restore to their obligation.
